Real Madrid players Sergio Ramos and Marcelo Vieira have been selected by France Football on the final list of 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or 2017.

The French magazine this week announced the list of players who’ll be hoping to pick up this most iconic and prestigious of awards that goes to the best player of the year, voted by journalists.

This is another recognition of the excellent season enjoyed by the two defenders, represented by René Ramos, President of RR-Soccer Management Agency. Since the last edition of the award, they have conquered no less than the Club World Cup, La Liga and Champions League titles.

For Sergio, this is his fifth nomination, including those under the previous FIFA Ballon d’Or format. The Camas-born central defender has become a mainstay in such lists thanks to his leadership, his importance to the team and decisive goals. Not in vain, the Madrid captain stood out last season for his famous last-minute goals.

The inclusion of the Brazilian full back is no surprise either; he has continued to impress on the left flank in both defence and attack.

France Football said, with the release of its special Ballon d’Or supplement, that the centre half was «very happy» to be among those selected and highlighted the importance of «having the mental strength» to never give up in any circumstances and give everything until the end of every game, even in the most adverse circumstances. The magazine underlined the captain’s importance to Real Madrid, both on and off the pitch. Let’s hope the voters take note.
